Day 1: Istanbull, Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque

Welcome! This is a blog of our journey to Historic Anatolia. And we began writing it seven months later at our first reunion at Cafe Nation in Brighton, Massachusetts.

Hagia Sophia was originally constructed as a church between A.D. 532 and 537 on the orders of the Byzantine Emperor.

In 1453, Constantinople was conquered by the Ottoman Turks and many of the mosaics on the wall of Hagia Sophia were eventually plastered over.

Known for its blue tiles adorning the walls of its interior, the Blue Mosque is in Sultanahmet District of Istanbul where Sultan's family of the Ottoman Empire (from 1453 to 1923) live.

Like many other mosques, it also comprises a tomb of the founder, Sultan Ahmet. It was built between 1609 and 1616, during the rule of ahmet I.
